Child care providers—you might have unclaimed dollars

A lot of Nebraskans have no idea that the State Treasurer’s Office keeps track of unclaimed property for individuals and organizations—including refunds, uncashed checks, security deposits and other items. There are many Nebraska child care providers among those with unclaimed property listed under their business or personal names.

Here’s how to discover if any of those dollars belong to you:

  1. Go to NebraskaLostCash.nebraska.gov. This is the state’s official website for finding unclaimed property held by the Treasurer’s office.
  2. Type in your name or the name of your child care business to search for unclaimed property. If there are any search results, the website may give you a general idea of the value of the property being held by the Treasurer’s Office.
  3. Click the Claim button next to your name. If you see your name listed multiple times, you can claim multiple properties at once.
  4. Click Continue to File Claim and enter the required information. Many claims do not require a notarized claim form or documentation.
  5. Watch for verification from the Treasurer’s Office. After you’ve submitted a claim, you’ll get a confirmation email that it has been received. If your claim can be automatically authenticated, you’ll receive a prompt response and approval. If your claim needs additional documentation, we’ll send an email outlining the information you’ll have to provide for your claim to be approved.

In most cases, users of the website find this process to be simple and smooth. My office’s unclaimed property specialists are waiting to reunite many Nebraskans—including child care professionals and business owners—with what is theirs. Don’t delay—find out today!
