Next week is Children's Book Week, the annual celebration of books for youngsters and the joy of reading. We know reading aloud to children from birth facilitates their development in many ways, including developing their phonemic awareness — the understanding that words are made up of distinct sounds — which is key to building vocabulary and later, reading skills.
The Children's Choice Book Awards were created in conjunction with Children's Book Week to allow kids to vote on their favorite books and to develop a reading list of kid-endorsed books for parents, grandparents, caregivers and everyone wanting to encourage young people to read. More than a million kids vote in the annual competition.
